- LANDGRAF I x FARNESE x LADYKILLER XX -

Breeders
Would do well to obtain
LANDADEL in the pedigree of their mares. LANDADEL is a known transmitter of movement and jumping technique. German breeders know this and covet their LANDADEL mares. LANDADEL, who passed away by accident at a much too-early age in 1996, was one of the most popular and successful stallions both within and outside Germany. Hardly any other stallion deserves the title of "foundation sire" as much as this impressive stallion. Considered to be the most outstanding son of the legendary Landgraf I, who himself is one of the top "stallions of the century". LANDADEL offers a high degree of certainty in his hereditary transmission. He is known for transmitting type, nobility, movement, color, and predisposition for jumping. LANDADEL was the performance winner in Medingen in 1985. His first foal crops already produced several approved stallion sons. His sons and daughters are sought after today for their herditary transmissions. LANDADEL's offspring are victorious in all sectors of the performance scene. His many successfull daughters include Lady Weingard, Let's Dance Girl, Luna Luna 2, Landiuga, and others.

LANDADEL
- LANDGRAF I x FARNESE x LADYKILLER XX -

LANDADEL, the Holsteiner stamping sire LANDADEL away from his home in Holstein, had a tremendous impact on the breed in Oldenburg and was able to not only pass on the jumping potential found in his native breed, but also excellent type, good conformation and outstanding movement. Today, LANDADEL's daughters are worth their weight in gold and every now and then, they come back into the spotlight with great offspring. Just as an example, we will name Stedinger, champion stallion in Oldenburg and already sire of many approved sons, he is by Sandro hit out of a LANDADEL daughter. Landadel, who was born in 1982, was a son of the multi million Euro sire Landgraf I and was inbred to one of Holstein's most important reforming sires of the 60s+70s: Ladykiller xx. Maybe a reason why LANDADEL was able to produce type and athleticism in such a dominant form. LANDADEL died at only 14 years of age, but left international competition horses (e.g. Lady Weingart) and approved stallions (e.g. LANDJONKER, Landcapitol, Le Champion or Landor S) for the Oldenburg breed worldwide.

NVDWhorses performed a long lasting in-depth matching research to identify world's best blood that could be used to cross with their promising and excellent performing PAVO CUP Finals mare
VAYADE VDW (JAZZZ x NAYADE STV - Argus x Uniform x Eros) - a descendant from the unique KWPN damline 102 / breeding family 236 - led us to blood of the exceptional stamping Old stallion LANDADEL with Holst roots.

- born 2002, 1.68m -
NMK (top 2005), PROK, PAVO-CUP Finals (3rd mare 2007) , elite, pref, sport dr, ZZL dr

There was a strong preference to stay with worlds best stud book KWPN and that made us selecting the striking long lined LANDADEL son LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING. Additional dam line research learnt that the KWPN stallion Landjonker alias Fruhling inherits very interesting quality and performance characteristics securing and extending the valuable characteristics of VAYADE VDW. Her bloodline is very much dominated by the influential Holsteiner stallion AMOR s.Herrscher of which lots of ancestry also appear in the pedigree of LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING.

LANDJONKER (in Germany) alias FRUHLING (in The Netherlands)
- LANDADEL x TIN ROCCO x MANOLETE XX -

During our research we discovered that Manolete XX is the sire of Kateja /St.Pr.St. which is the dam of Katlaya s.Thymian XX. Katlaya is dam of Kalla /St.Pr.St. which produced the approved stallions Landchampion (s.Landcaptitol) and Le Champion s.
LANDADEL. Both Le Champion and LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING have Manolete XX in their dam line and ... LANDADEL as their common sire. We also discovered that the beautiful Oldenburg approved stallion Laitin is the result of the cross-breeding LE CHAMPION (s.LANDADEL x ARGUS s.Pion. Exciting to see here a successful cross-breeding of LANDADEL and ARGUS bloodlines. Notice that VAYADE VDW is JAZZ x ARGUS and that breeding VAYADE VDW to LANDJONKER s.LANDADEL is also cross-breeding LANDADEL and ARGUS bloodlines.

Also during our research we discovered that several
JAZZ x FRUHLING combinations competed successfully on the highest level in the dressage arena. I.e. GP: Jive Magic, Decor Just Royal Dance, Razz and PSG/Inter I: Unique Sogno, Djive, Djuice.

LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING began his breeding career in the Netherlands where he won or was highly placed in medium to advanced level jumper tests. He has sired ten approved sons in Germany so far. Just like his sire, LANDADEL, LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING produces nothing but dark horses (no chestnuts). His dam line also produced the internationally successful dressage horse, Brillant/Beatriz Ferrer-Salat (Spain) and the approved Argentinus sons, Avellynus and Aventyno and most recently, Sir Wilson, the winner of the 2002 ZfDP approval in Kreuth.
The off-spring of this brown stallion
LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING who was born in 1987 out of a Tin Rocco dam - GRISELDA -, had won 488,590 Euro by the end of 2004. The stallion was stationed in the Netherlands for five years where he was known as FRUHLING before he returned to Germany in 1995.

Now - after years - the cross of mare
VAYADE VDW (JAZZ) and FRUHLING s.LANDADEL) has proven to be very successful resulting in our beautiful and excellent brood mare EDIYADE VDW (PROK, EPTM, elite).

PROGENY & INFLUENCE

LANDADEL - 50.39% TB in his veins - was one who got things moving, who proved his fighting spirit even under the most adverse conditions and passed this dominant trait to his progeny. When it comes to an incredibly homogenous type and a willingness to perform, LANDADEL revolutionized breeding. You recognized his off-spring right away - and he advanced to become a trademark for modern sporting talent. In spite of a turbulent and trying biography marked by heavy blows of fate, this Holstein stallion created a dynasty of off-spring that have taken countless first places and medals. His progeny have won more than 3.7 million Euro so far - and not just in show jumping either. LANDADEL also produced outstanding dressage horses. This exceptional sire can boast with numbers that make you dizzy: 66 licensed sons including three Champion Stallions in a row, 50 State Premium mares, more than 92 horses successful at advanced level just in Germany - this makes him one of the most significant sires in the world.

LANDADEL
- LANDGRAF I x FARNESE x LADYKILLER XX -

LANDADEL has influenced breeding with three components that are very rare in this combination: he makes brilliant types that have outstanding jumping ability and are also strong movers" is the premium rating given to LANDADEL by Oldenburg's Breeding Director, Dr. Wolfgang Schulte-Schleppinghoff.
But
LANDADEL isn't just the sum of convincing facts about his hereditary powers, he also stirred up personal feelings, made chances possible and empowered the people around him to individual success stories. "LANDADEL helped us make our breakthrough - without him we wouldn't be where we are today" is the way Antonius Bockmann pays tribute to this stallion that stood at his Oldenburg station for nine years. "Lady Weingard was the horse of my life - I had the most success with her" is the praise Markus Beerbaum has for this Landadel daughter with whom he won team gold at the European Championships in Mannheim. But also Gerd Sosath's station which has meanwhile grown to 19 stallions was initiated solely by the LANDADEL son, Landor S.

LANDADEL was born March 15, 1982 in Schleswig-Holstein, that northern part of Germany between two seas, not too far from the Holstein marketing center in Elmshorn, in a village called Klein Offenseth. Ilse Hell, the sister-in-law of the unforgotten stallion owner, Maas J. Hell, bred Landadel out of her mare, Novella. "LANDADEL was noble as a foal already but didn't really stand out although his movements were actually quite special in those days" remembers Ilse Hell. His true quality was only revealed later as a young stallion - where else with a pedigree like that - over the fences. The personality that this stallion would one day become was already evident in Landadel's dam: "Novella was an exceptional mare with plenty of self-confidence and an outstanding character. She also had excellent movements" says her breeder.
.

NOVELLA
St.Pr.St. hauptstutbuch, 1.70m
- Farnese x Ladykiller XX -

Novella, by Farnese-Ladykiller xx, produced eight foals. Among these were three licensed sons, Aurel, LANDADEL and Acadius. Her Merano daughter, Valetta, is the dam of Willi Melliger's world class jumper, Calvaro. Novella's grandson, Luxius by Lux Z, stands at the Bockmann station.
The owners of Holstein horses are very proud of the lines their horses come from.
LANDADEL comes from line 1859 which has produced 14 licensed stallions so far. On the sire's side of his pedigree you find a name that is synonymous all over the world for jumper breeding of the very best quality. A stallion responsible for more than 130 licensed sons and numerous internationally successful sport horses whose off-spring won 4,332,946 Euro just in 2004: Landgraf I. A world class sire who is honored by a life-size bronze statue in Elmshorn and whose greatest personal achievements are found in horses such as Cian O'Connors' Olympic gold horse in Athens, Waterford Crystal, and Jos Lansink's World Cup winner, Libero.

Farnese stands on the dam's side of his pedigree, a cornerstone stallion in Holstein breeding known for high performance horses such as Franke Sloothaak's Olympic horse, Farmer, with whom he won the 1984 team bronze medal. Caliber, substance, enormous jumping ability and intelligence characterize Farnese in just a few words. Landgraf's sire, Ladykiller xx, is found twice in this pedigree - a highly potent inbreeding component.
.

Mr. Maas J. Hell
presented Landadel at Holstein Verband stallion selection event

LANDADEL left home for the first time when he was two and a half years old. That was when Maas J. Hell purchased the young stallion from his sister-in-law. The pre-selection for the Holstein Verband approval had just taken place and the verdict of the selection committee was "Very chic type but not large enough. Take him back home for awhile and present him again later." The Holstein Verband didn't get to see the stallion again any time soon - Hell presented the bay stallion without a mark in Oldenburg and they licensed him right off the bat: "He received applause for his movements even during the inspection on hard ground", remembers Ilse Hell. Oldenburg's Breeding Director, Dr. Wolfgang Schulze-Schleppinghoff also remembers the first time he saw the young stallion: "We all applauded - LANDADEL was already a commanding personality and his appealing type and expression made him very attractive. In retrospect, it was a blessing for Oldenburg that Holstein sent him back home."
There was another turbulent story in the stallion's history that ended in a dispute that had to be settled in court.
LANDADEL covered mares naturally at Hajo Willms' station in Esenshamer Oberdeich for two years in 1985 and 1986 when a dispute arose concerning ownership. Hajo Willms claimed that the stallion belonged to him and Maas J. Hell claimed the same. The question was decided in court in favor of Maas J. Hell who got his stallion back.

Meanwhile,
LANDADEL had won his stallion performance test in Medingen: with a score of 136.26, breeders took good notice. His double talent was outstanding - with a score of 137.72 in jumping and 131.43 in dressage he was on second place in both disciplines. He even received a 9.0 on the course - all the best prerequisites for a career in sport. But LANDADEL's victory at his performance test was his first and last adventure in sport. Soon afterward he had to be stabled at the Veterinary Clinic in Hochmoor for nine months, four of which he could not even stand, because of a severe colic and subsequent laminitis. "One of his testicles had to be removed during the operation and then laminitis developed in both hooves. He must have been in unbelievable pain but his will to survive was so strong that he made it" remembers Bockmann. He believed in this stallion as he had ridden him once himself during the performance test. "LANDADEL could have become a dressage horse - he was that rideable and strong moving". At that time, LANDADEL's half-brother on his dam's side, Aurel by Ahorn, had been standing at the Bockmann station. When Aurel had to be put down because of colic while he was at his performance test, Bockmann started to investigate the whereabouts of LANDADEL. "Some rumors had it that he was now a gelding and others that he was no longer alive. But when I called Hell, he told me that the stallion was still in the clinic and I could lease him if I wanted to." And that's exactly what Bockmann did because LANDADEL had not only his outstanding performance test results but also two very promising crops as references meanwhile.

LANDADEL
- LANDGRAF I x FARNESE x LADYKILLER XX -

The gamble paid off. The same year the stallion left the clinic he covered nearly 100 mares naturally. LANDADEL advanced to the star position at the station in Lastrup. "Once we switched to artificial insemination, he had around 300 mares in a good year", Bockmann says. And that even though he was never again shown under a rider and had to spend several weeks in the clinic after each breeding season to regain his strength. But his off-spring said it all.

Breeder: Ilse Hell

Sadly for the Stallion Commissions, no one remembers it when they got it right – but everyone remembers when they get it wrong – and the Holstein Commission got it seriously wrong when they rejected the Landgraf son,
LANDADEL.

Thomas Mohr, the director of the Maas J. Hell Stud where the stallion was born, told me the story in an interview in 2007: “
LANDADEL was not accepted for the stallion licensing at Neumünster by the Holsteiner Commission, they said he was too light – a good sport horse not a stallion!”

“So then he was leased to Böckmanns, and they bred with him for about ten years before he died, and every year he was in the top three for jumping sires, but he also bred dressage horses. Most of the foals went to S class. Calvaro and
LANDADEL were from the same family – LANDADEL’s dam was Calvaro’s grand mother.”

“The
LANDADEL mares were very typey, with a lot of blood. The geldings and stallions were a bit bigger, not so Thoroughbred looking as the mares. Dam sire of LANDADEL is Farnese, and Farnese is very heavy.”

Despite the Licensing Commission’s assessment,
LANDADEL went on to be champion of his 100-day test at Medingen in 1985.

LANDADEL is one of those rarest of creatures – a stallion who sires top dressage as well as jumping progeny. Indeed at the 2001 World Cups, LANDADEL was unique in producing representatives in both the dressage and jumping finals, with the exquisite Leonardo da Vinci in the dressage with Gonnelien Rothenberger, and, in the jumping, Helena Weinberg’s Little Gun.

LANDADEL is regarded as one of the most important sons of Landgraf – and carries a double cross of the great Ladykiller XX, and bears out the theory that Landgraf worked best with mares with a high proportion of Thoroughbred blood. Landlord 4 and Lausbub 148 were out of mares by Tin Rocco xx. Lanciano is out of a mare by Marlon xx and Lucky Luke is out of a mare by Fra Diavalo (by Frivol xx). LANDADEL’s grand-dam is 3/4 Thoroughbred (Ladykiller xx / Gauner xx).

FARNESE

- Fahnrich x Loretto -

His dam’s sire, Farnese was famed for this extravagant trot, and was used as a demonstration stallion by the Holsteiner Verband – besides the movement, the line was noted for its great substance and good conformation. Farnese’s son Farmer was on the 1984 German Olympic showjumping team with Franke Sloothaak.

LANDADEL’s stallion sons include Le Cou Cou, Landfriese I, Landstern, Landjonker, Landclassic, Landkoenig and Landor S. LANDADEL is the sire of four Oldenburg Stallion licensing champions: Lord Kemm, Lagoheidor, Landkaiser and Laudatio. Perhaps his most famous performer has been the mare, Lady Weingard, who was ridden in her competition career by Markus Beerbaum.

LANDADEL’s grandson, the Hanoverian gelding, Lantinus (by Landkoenig out of an Argentinus mare) had an extraordinary series of wins in 2008 with the Irish jumping rider, Dennis Lynch. The pair won in Grand Prix in Rome, La Baule, Hamburg and Doha, to go to the head of the WBFH standings.

In the 2007-2008 Monneron leaderboard of the top 75 jumping stallions in the world, based on the FEI results of the top 2515 jumpers,
LANDADEL was 30th with 10 winners. LANDADEL’s son, Landfriese I, ranked 52nd with six successful competitors.

OFFSPRING

Le Cou Cou, the licensed stallion who came from LANDADEL's first crop, was one of the first horses to be successful in sport. Le Cou Cou bred out of a Goldstern dam, this jumper won the Nation's Cup in Prague in 1994 under Lars Nieberg and prizes totalling 66,500 Euro.

Fighting Alpha
With Fighting Alpha, Nieberg has a
LANDADEL grandson under saddle.
.

FIGHTING ALPHA
- LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING x Farn -

This KWPN stallion by LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING x Farn has collected international ribbons in series. He finished as the winner in 3-star competitions in Moorsela/BEL, Bologna/ITA, and Aachen, Norten-Hardenburg, Kiel, Wiesbaden, Bremen, Dortmund and Munster in Germany. "He's the kind of horse everyone dreams about - from rideability to willingness to perform" Nieberg praises this stallion who had won a grand total of 379,412 Euro by the end of 2004.

Remark: the rideability and willingness were two important elements that made
NVDWhorses decide to combine their mare VAYADE VDW (JAZZ x ARGUS) and LANDADEL son LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING

Landjonker alias Fruhling
Fighting Alpha's sire - was one of
LANDADEL's first sons to be licensed. The off-spring of this brown stallion who was born in 1987 out of a Tin Rocco dam - GRISELDA -, had won 488,590 Euro by the end of 2004. The stallion was stationed in the Netherlands for five years where he was known as FRUHLING before he returned to Germany in 1995.

Landfriese I is another of
LANDADEL's first sons to pass on their great sire's bloodlines. This stallion, bred out of a Manstein - Vollkorn xx dam, has often been described as exceptional. His life was unfortunately very short: the two-time Bundeschampionat finalist had to be put down at the age of seven. He left many off-spring that were successful at advanced level and had won 257,000 Euro by the end of 2004 as well as six licensed sons including Landsieger I, the Champion Stallion of the Oldenburg approval in 1993 who set off on an exemplary career. Landsieger I graduated from winning tests for young riding horses and jumpers as well as aptitude tests to successfully participating at the Bundeschampionat twice before he proceeded to reach advanced level and Grand Prix.

Georgenhof'ss Lausejunge by Landfriese I - Pilot also emphasizes the great loss to breeders in connection with Landfriese's too early passing away. In 2000 he was a Bundeschampionat finalist and by 2004 he and his rider, Anna-Maria Jakobs took sixth place in the German Championships for show jumpers in the ladies class. The liver chestnut stallion, Landgold, and his enormous jumping ability also honor his sire. He received the highest score of 10 in jumping at his performance test in 1999. At the Bundeschampionat in 2000 he received scores of 9.2 and 9.3, making him Vice Champion in the class for five year olds. In 2003 Landgold was successful under Franke Sloothaak in advanced level competitions in Leipzig, Borken and Dortmund.

LANDADEL's off-spring were already so popular in 1989 that the six foals at the auction in Vechta were sold an average price of 20,000 DM. Le Champion, a colt, was one of these foals who was sold to the US for 37,000 DM, had just been crowned Vice Champion at the first German Foal Championships. In the US he later became the West Coast Junior Champion Stallion. By 1990 his first daughters were collecting the best ribbons at the German Broodmare Show: Lavina and Venedig ranked second and fourth respectively.
Remark: the beautiful Oldenburg approved stallion Laitin is the result of the cross-breeding Le Champion (s.
LANDADEL) x ARGUS s.Pion. This successful blood cross was one of the elements that made NVDWhorses decide to combine their mare VAYADE VDW (JAZZ x ARGUS) and LANDJONKER alias FRUHLING.

LANDJONKER (in Germany) alias FRUHLING (in The Netherlands)
- LANDADEL x TIN ROCCO x MANOLETE XX -

In 1993 when the first
LANDADEL off-spring were seven years old and allowed to compete at advanced level. Looking at the list of prize money won that year showed what an exceptional stallion LANDADEL had become: 63,693 DM had been won by his off-spring. Lady Weingard is another great horse that was in the starting block for a grand career. Marcus Beerbaum described her as the most successful horse he had in his career till then as a "very self-assured, fighting spirit". With her he won team gold at the European Championships in 1997 and the World Championships in 1998. He rode this mare that was purchased by Ingrid Bergmann as a filly for 10,500 DM at the auction in Vechta four years before Jorne Sprehe took over in Lady Weingard's saddle. In 2002, just about every two weeks, this pair took off and racked up with first places at advanced level competitions one after the other. Their greatest achievement till then was when they took the team European Champion title for Young Riders in Le Touquet, France and silver individually. In 2004 they participated in the European Championships in Portugal and won the German Championships at home. With all those achievements, Lady Weingard is certainly one of LANDADEL's most successful offspring: By the end of 2003 she had won a total of 427,729 Euro.

Landkaiser
Her full brother, Landkaiser, took a very different route. Born in 1993, he became the Champion Stallion at the Oldenburg approval in 1995 and successfully completed tests for show jumpers before he switched disciplines and has meanwhile won dressage tests at St. George level.

LANDKAISER
-
LANDADEL x Weinstern -

With his light bay coat, his few unobtrusive marks and typical noble looks, there's no denying who Landkaiser's sire is. "You recognize Landadel's off-spring right away - most of them are bay with very few marks, no chestnuts, no blacks", Tonne Bockmann says. Laudatio also falls into this category. Along with Landkaiser he is one of the four Champion Stallions that honor their sire. The coveted winner's sash went over his head at the Oldenburg approval in 1996. A year later he finished his performance test in Medingen on first place with a score of 129.96. In 1998, all they wrote in the PSI catalogue about him was: Approved winner, performance test winner - what more could you possibly want? Whoever it was that wanted exactly that put 650,000 DM on the table for him. Four years later Laudatio represented Switzerland at the World Championships in Jerez under the French rider, Francoise Cantamessa. Another full brother, Landclassic, who was approved in Verden in 1995, was a winner of advanced level jumping competitions. A son, Lagrano, qualified for the 2003 Bundeschampionat in the class for five year old show jumpers and was sold to France at the PSI auction for 96,000 Euro. Another son, Lassandro, out of a Sandro dam, was the most expensive horse at the Elite Auction in Verden in the fall of 2004, selling for 180,000 Euro to the US.

Laudatio
Was Landadel's last Champion Stallion. And he concluded a successful trilogy that no other stallion in Oldenburg has ever matched.

LAUDATIO
-
LANDADEL x Trajan -

From 1994 to 1996, LANDADEL presented the highest ranking stallion at the approval: Lagoheidor, Landkaiser and Laudatio. All three sons were decorated with the Oldenburg Verband's winner's sash.

LANDADEL was seven years old when he presented his first Champion Stallion in 1989, Lord Kemm, which was stationed at the State Stud in Mecklenburg. The run on Landadel continuously increased which also became quite evident at the auctions. In 1987 a colt from his first crop was sold for 11,000 DM. Four years later this colt was sold for 100,000 DM and just a few months later at the PSI auction he was sold for 350,000 DM. That's what you call fantastic growth! This gelding out of a Coriolan dam delivered what he promised and proved again that Landadel could also make special class dressage horses. He qualified for the World Cup Tour under Sven Rothenberger, took the Reserve position at the Olympic Games in Atlanta when he was nine and then continued his career under Rothenberger's wife, Gonnelien.

Leonardo da Vinci
GP dressage, is another one in an armada of
LANDADEL off-spring that brought high prices at the auctions.

LEONARDO DA VINCI
-
LANDADEL x Coriolan -

Leonardo da Vinci is a 13 year old Oldenburg gelding by
LANDADEL x Coriolan bred by H. Krushe from Ganderkesee, Germany. The horse is very temperamental and difficult to ride, but Gonnelien is finally able to push a clear, correct test out of him. His temperament and sensibility make him a real horse to peep at. "It has taken me a year to click. Between the WEG in Rome and the 2000 CHIO Rotterdam I was able to score 70% with him but had never ridden a waterproof test," Gonnelien said. "Leo has all it takes to be the perfect horse, I just need to gain his trust."

60,000 DM was paid for Lauvette the
LANDADEL x Alme)-Star in 1995, 100,000 DM for the LANDADEL-Argentinus daughter Ultima in 1996 - and with the regularity of a clockwork, LANDADEL sent his young athletes to Vechta. In 1995, a LANDADEL-Grannus foal brought 61,000 DM. His off-spring were also among the price highlights at the PSI auctions: in 1996 an Italian buyer paid 251,000 DM for Lady, a mare with her sire's gorgeous type. A year later a dressage horse named Le Touquet cost 500,000 DM. In 1998 Landadel even had a trio of top quality horses: along with Laudatio, a Westphalian stallion named Le Carneval out of a Grande dam was purchased for 425,000 DM and another stallion called Lichtblick out of a Ramino dam sold for 263,000 DM. In 1999, Lagumas Light followed with 370,000 DM and in 2000 a LANDADEL grandson named Landay by Landfriese I-Aldatus was sold for 140,000 DM. Many of these have demonstrated their willingness to perform in competitions.

Silva Little Gun
A grey called Silva Little Gun is another one of these. When he was ridden by Helena Weinberg, competitors often only saw this pair from behind.

SILVA LITTLE GUN
- s.
LANDADEL -

As early as 1998 under Hauke Luther he won a Grand Prix in Malmo, Sweden and really gathered momentum the following year: London, the World Cup in Berlin, a Grand Prix in Stuttgart - they won them all. In 2001 this Oldenburg known for fast rounds won the World Cup in Moscow, a feat he repeated again two years later in 2003 which helped to increase his life time earnings to 376,293 Euro.

One of
LANDADEL's off-spring even made it to the top when prizes were awarded at the Hamburg Derby which has a reputation as the most feared course in the world. That was in 2001 with an awesome mare named Landdame FRH ridden by Franke Sloothaak. The mare stood out as a seven year old already because of her enormous jumping talent and ambition: she won in Rotterdam and Donaueschingen and a year later in Neumunster, Rome, Hickstead and Kiel as well as Grand Prix in Leipzig and Zurich and a 3-star competition in London in 2002. Sloothaak purchased this Hanoverian mare at the fall auction in Verden in 1996 for 100,000 DM. Just three years later she was the most successful LANDADEL off-spring in the FN's Breeding Year Book with 149,765 Euro in prizes.

Laurion
Her full brother, Laurion, a licensed stallion, was no less successful: He was a finalist at the Bundeschampionat twice under Soren Pedersen, participated in the European Championships in 2001, became Vice Danish Champion in 2002 and demonstrated his willingness to perform in numerous Nation's Cups and Grand Prix.

LAURION
- s.
LANDADEL x Glucksstern -

It is exactly this great attitude that is LANDADEL's trademark and the trait gets passed from one generation to the next. Need an example? Ludwig von Bayern with a Bavarian brand and the spectator's darling at the Oldenburg Hengsttage 2001, is a LANDADEL grandson through his sire, Landor S: "He's the best youngster I ever had", Gerd Sosath said who stands the stallion at his station and shows him in sport. The highest scores in his 30 day test with a 10 for rideability and 9.5 in free-jumping as well as first places in tests for jumpers appropriate for his age in novice and elementary level and qualification for the Bundeschampionat in 2004 all confirm Gerd Sosath's expectations.

Landor S
His sire, Landor S, has already more than confirmed all of the hopes ever placed in him. More than 20 licensed sons are found among the off-spring of this Oldenburg stallion born 1991 as well as numerous successful sport horses and high priced auction horses. Landor S demonstrated his awesome talent in competition. In 1994, at his stallion performance test, he showed where his destiny lay: with 133.66 points he placed second in jumping. A year later he was the best placed four year old at the Oldenburg Stallion Championships, State Champion of five year old jumpers in 1996 in Rastede and placed in the Bundeschampionat finals in Warendorf.

With phenomenal suppleness in the turns, a leg technique that is lightening fast and reactions that are just as fast, Landor S certainly deserved to win the Bundeschampionat the following year.

LANDOR S
- GP Show Jumping -
- s.
LANDADEL x Godehard -

This
LANDADEL-Godehard son was successful all the way up to Grand Prix. Meanwhile the stallion has been redrawn from sport and now makes his money solely as a sire - a job at which he is also most successful. In 2003 nine of his off-spring reached the site of his own triumph: the Burandtwiese in Warendorf. And he was the only sire here to have two off-spring among the finalists in the class for six year old jumpers. One of these was Lagato, sold at the PSI auction in 2003 for 200,000 Euro, a stallion out of a Caletto I dam who reached the jump-off with a score of 9.3 but was still beaten by others, including a half-brother on his sire's side named Llandovery who took sixth place. Llandovery caused a firework of bids at the 2002 PSI auction that only ended when the priced reached 600,000 Euro. Not quite as expensive but still nearly a record was the price paid at the French auction in Fences in 2002 for the Landor S son, L'Arc de Triomphe: 460,000 Euro. Another extraordinary athlete is Little Love out of a Classiker - Godehard dam who became the 1998 Oldenburg State Champion of five year old show jumpers.

LANDOR S

Landor S' off-spring also drew a lot of attention at the approvals. At the Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-International in particular that was founded in 2002, the stallion has been a dominating force: two of the three champion stallions this Verband has selected so far were by Landor S: Lovis Corinth, the first champion stallion for the new Verband in 2002 and Lauterbach in 2004. Lovis Corinth, an awesomely modern stallion bred out of a Holstein mare by Corofino I, was highly coveted at the auction in Vechta where he was sold for 90,000 DM. As Reserve Champion of the 2001 Oldenburg approval and scores of 9.5 in freejumping and 9.0 on the course at his 70 day test, this stallion has demonstrated exceptional talent for performance. Also laced with Holstein bloodlines from his Contender dam, Lauterbach is another extra class jumper talent who sold at the approval for 50,000 Euro. But not just Landor S' sons have inherited these qualities. In 1999 his daughter, Lady Madonna, won the Oldenburg Elite Broodmare Show in Rastede and there were two more Brillantring mares before Lady Heida won the class for mares with emphasis on jumping at the German Broodmare Show in Neustadt/Dosse three years later. Her full sister, Lady Heida II, received a score of 10 in free jumping at her performance test.

LANDOR S

LANDADEL x Godehard -

Landor S is not his dam's only licensed son though. The dam, Fureida, was bred to Landadel several times and the results were three licensed sons: Along with Landor S there was Landwerder, a successful Grand Prix stallion in the US, and Lagoheidor. This strong moving bay stallion won his performance test and after successfully competing in show jumping for awhile, he switched to the dressage ring and advanced to Grand Prix in the Netherlands. Other most striking off-spring are Lonevan, a horse with a Baden-Wurttemberg brand who qualified for the 2004 Nurnberg Burgpokal with Ingrid Klimke and the licensed stallion, Lord Oldenburg, sold for 200,000 DM in Vechta. The fourth leaf of this clover is a grey gelding called Laertes who competes at advanced level.

And speaking of advanced level: The highest stage in the career of a sport horse - accompanied by the pride of the breeder - has been reached by many of Landadel's progeny. Dobel's Luigi was one of them. Born 1991, this Oldenburg won numerous first and other places with Otto Becker up to 3-star level. "The mares were often more interesting. Some of the heavy Farnese traits that came from
LANDADEL's dam's side often appeared in the males. The mares were usually more elegant" remembers Tonne Bockmann. One of the most successful LANDADEL "ladies" for a long time was Argelith Luna Luna. "A really bitchy mare but unbelievably cautious on the course and a real fighter" is the way her owner and rider, Eva Bitter, characterizes her. She competeted in one show after the other with this mare out of a Vollkorn xx dam and was on the winning team in the Nation's Cups in Prag in 1998 and Budapest in 1999. "Now we are hoping for a foal by Stakkato", says Eva Bitter hopefully.

Fein Cera
Still in the middle of her career is Fein Cera. This brown mare was in best form at the 2002 World Championships in Jerez where it was dreadfully hot and advanced to win the title.

FEIN CERA
-
LANDADEL x Cor de la Bryere -

With the traditional change of riders, Fein Cera enabled all riders to clear rounds although the Swedish rider, Helena Lundback, was burdened with a penalty for time. The best horse at the World Championships, she carried her rider, Peter Wylde, to the bronze medal. In 2003, this mare bred by Harm Thormahlen won 57,882 Euro, also winning the Grand Prix in Dusseldorf and Norten-Hardenberg after having won 54,279 Euro the year before. In 2004 the pair crowned their career by taking home the team silver medal.
The Oldenburg mare, C'Dur, was another of
LANDADEL's highlights: she won the class for five year and older mares at the 1998 German Broodmare Show in Warendorf. Bred by Paul Wendeln out of a Zeus dam, she produced a Donnerhall son named D'Dur who became the second Reserve Champion at the 2000 approval. C'Dur's full brother Laphroaig, the spitting image of his sire, was successful in tests for jumpers and is now active in Austria.

LANDADEL's dam's side is also a guarantee for quality. Many licensed stallions and successful sport horses have resulted from such a constellation.

Roh Magic
One example: Roh Magic, a North Rhine-Westphalian State Stud stallion by the Grand Prix winner, Rohdiamant, premium stallion in the final ring at the approval in Munster-Handorf in 2001.

ROH MAGIC
- 1.70m -

LANDADEL -

Another horse bred according to this recipe was the licensed Premium stallion, Rabano (Rohdiamant x
LANDADEL), who was purchased as a foal for 50,000 DM. His son, Rosizky (Rabano x Landgraf I), bred out of a Holstein dam, became one of the premium stallions in Munster-Handorf in 2002. Escalero s.Ex Libris combined with LANDADEL was worth 170,000 DM to buyers in Vechta and the combination with the star Hanoverian stallion, Weltmeyer, produced the Bavarian State Stud sire, Weltenadel as well as the Hanoverian performance test winner, Westernhagen. When bred to the World Champion in dressage, Sandro Hit, a LANDADEL daughter produced the 2002 Oldenburg Champion Stallion, Stedinger, who not only successfully competed in tests for riding horses but also produced striking type foals. With the awesome jumper Caretello as his sire, the Bavarian stallion Carlando (dam sire LANDADEL) has been successful in international show jumping under Heinrich-Hermann Engemann. The Bundeschampionat finalist, Forrester (dam sire LANDADEL), who is by the 2x Olympic team gold winner, For Pleasure, proved his willingness to perform under Soren Pedersen at international level.

August der Starke
With Argentinus, another
LANDADEL daughter called Elinda produced one of the price record breaking horses in Vechta, August der Starke: this licensed stallion successfully ridden up to Grand Prix by the Austrian rider, Victoria Max-Theurer, was purchased in 1999 for 667,000 DM.

AUGUST DER STARKE
- 1.72m -
- Argentinus x
LANDADEL -

The same applies to
LANDADEL's sons: 66 sons were licensed in Germany alone and many of these proved their qualities in sports. For example the Hanoverian stallion, Lambourghini Diabolo out of a Calypso II-Graphit dam: after winning tests for jumpers, this stallion born 1995 successfully advanced to the top.

Lancado
The noble Lancado, who received the dream score of 10 at his stallion performance test not only has that typical
LANDADEL look but Contender-Wedekind in his pedigree. He proved the so highly esteemed willingness to perform that his pedigree promised to get competing at advanced level jumping.

LANCADO
- 1.70m -
-
LANDADEL x Contender -

Landcapitol (
LANDADEL x Capitano) is another stallion with a very fine pedigree. As the name already indicates, this Holstein stallion with ribbons in advanced level show jumping was bred out of a full sister of the trademark stallion, Capitol. Born in 1994, this stallion has already produced five licensed sons. A stablemate of this bay stallion stationed with Bockmann called Landrover (LANDADEL x Alme Z), who is a successful medium level jumper, has meanwhile been leased to Poland. His dam line has also proved to be particularly strong: when bred to Cor de la Bryere, the dam Aleska Z produced Cordalme who became an internationally successful show jumper and the sire of Olympic Game participants as well as HGF Can Fly who became the 2002 Bundeschampion in the class for five year olds. Landphonix (LANDADEL x Phoenix) has also reached the stratosphere of international show jumping. Inbred on his dam's side over the Westphalian trademark stallion, Pilot, the stallion was a finalist at the 1999 Bundeschampionat, won a jumping competition just for stallions in Sogel and has meanwhile made a reputation internationally. His licensed son, Landpirol, who took sixth place at the Bundeschampionat in the class for five year old jumpers and has been on the German Olympic team since 2004 under Marco Kutscher, is another great advertisement for his sire.

In Conclusion
LANDADEL in conclusion - The list of successful Landadel sons could be continued indefinitely. For example, Lamoureux II (LANDADEL x Raphael), Champion Stallion at the 1996 North Rhine-Westphalian approval and stationed at the State Stud in Warendorf. Or Lincoln L s.LANDADEL who was successfully ridden by Markus Merschformann in Frankfurt, London and Paris where he finished with his name on the winners' list. LANDADEL was no longer alive when many of his off-spring achieved their greatest success. The stallion had to be put down due to a severe colic in 1995 when he was just 13 years old. "We brought him directly to the clinic but it was too late and we didn't want to put him through the agony of an operation anymore", remembers Bockmann. The era of this very special sire had reached its end. "The premature death of this exceptional sire was a heavy blow for German breeds because he produced outstanding sons and well above average performance horses", is the way Horst Ense, the chairman of the committee on breeding matters at the German FN, expressed it. The fact remains that the influence LANDADEL on modern sport horse breeding is shared by very few stallions. The designation "trademark stallion" barely fits this Holstein stallion; that's more an understatement.

The one of a kind impressive and valuable sire LANDADEL deserved and got a statue in bronze.

HIS SIRE

LANDGRAF I
1.70m, 1966-1996, descendant from Holstein stamm 275

LANDGRAF died in 1996 at the age of 30. In his article in Breeding News (August 1999) French journalist, Pascal Renauldon records the great stallion's passing: On 10 April 1996, the Holstein breeders had celebrated, with great pomp, their charmed stallion, during a ceremony which had assembled some of his most celebrated progeny: Libero H, Taggi and some 30 others.

LANDGRAF I
- Ladykiller XX x Aldato-Anblick XX x Fangball (Fanal x Lorbeer) x Loretto x First-Tobias x Kuerassier -

Exactly one month after this hommage,
LANDGRAF passed away due to heart failure, even though his physical condition had showed no signs of decrepitude. His strong back was not swayed, his proud eye of a dominant stallion and imposing neck were still as superb as when they appeared on photographs of him as a youngster. Yet LANDGRAF was not initially widely accepted as a stallion in Germany because sons of Thoroughbreds were still regarded with suspicion.

It was after the 1975 Equitana in Germany, where
LANDGRAF easily cleared a 6'6" several times a day, that international riders started to buy his offspring. For many years, LANDGRAF led the list of sires of sporthorses. His offspring have won just under seven million dollars mainly in showjumping, and in this respect he is the top sire in the world today. The runner-up, Furioso II is more than two million dollars behind, and LANDGRAF still has a few offspring in competition to add to the total. Born in 1966, LANDGRAF belongs to the first vintage of his sire, LADYKILLER XX, who produced another hero one year later in LORD, another of the most influential stallions in Holstein.

LADYKILLER XX was a very popular Thoroughbred stallion, born in England, and a descendant of the very famous stallion line of Phalaris - Fairway - Blue Peter - Sailing Light, combining with Hyperion. His dam also carried Phalaris-blood, as well as Son-in-Law.

In spite of his famous ancestors -
LADYKILLER XX was a failure as a race horse. His performance genes were still there, of course, but they substantiated not as speed but mainly as jumping talent with the occasional good dressage horse as well. All of LADYKILLER XX's offspring could easily be recognised as such, and LANDGRAF was no exception. These horses have beautiful noble faces with large bright eyes, bey - brown coats - and they could jump!

LANDGRAF I
- Ladykiller XX x Aldato-Anblick XX x Fangball (Fanal x Lorbeer) x Loretto x First-Tobias x Kuerassier -

LANDGRAF had a very good temperament which he passes on dominantly, together with excellent movement. His dam, Warthburg, came from line 275 and accumulates the performance genes of Ethelbert, Aehill and Cicero, who are responsible for laying the foundation of the Holsteiner Sporthorse as the world's leading jumping stud book. Warthburg was born in 1962 and was bought as a weanling by Baron Friedrich Christian de Kielmansegg. After a competition career as a jumper, she produced Jenni, by the Thoroughbred stallion, Little Lion xx - Jenni is the dam of Orchidee, who was a member of the gold medal winning German jumping team at the Seoul Olympic Games with Dirk Hafemeister. Orchidee in turn was the dam of Avion (Athlet Z) ridden in international competition by Ludger Beerbaum.

Warthburg then produced six foals by
LADYKILLER XX. LANDGRAF was born in 1966, the following year saw his full brother, Landgraf II who was sold to the south of Germany where he was gelded! Under the name - Leon III - he was on to compete at Grand Prix level with Manfred Schlusselburg. In the following two years, the fillies Eva and Frederica were produced - Frederica when bred to Farnese produced the licensed stallion, Fridericus. In 1970 Warthburg produced another filly, Landgraffin who was ridden in the 70's and 80's by Hugo Simon, winning many speed and puissance classes. Bred to Cor de la Bryere, Landgraffin then produced the stallion Cash, who also competed internationally with Simon before his death at the age of 10 while competing at Aachen.

LANDGRAF was licensed in 1968 along with twelve other sons of LADYKILLER XX. LANDGRAF finished in 5th place with the comments' a lot of presence, good gaits with excellent propulsion, good confromation and average hindquarters. LANDGRAF was chosen to represent the Holsteiner breed at the 1972 German National Agricultural Show - and finished last. Following protests from the Holstein officials, this was upgraded into second place, and then in an elegant piece of gobbledegook to 'first place C'.

Jumping is the field where he excells most as a sire. The list of his showjumping offspring is endless. A few names for example: Freestyle (formerly Lalique) won Aachen Grand Prix, Libero won the Dutch National title five times (!) and also the 1994 Volvo World Cup. The licenced stallion, Lacros, is another along with top performers: Lucky Luke, Lanciano, Landlord, Lausbub and Taggi.

Nearly sixty colts by
LANDGRAF have been licenced for the Holsteiner stud book, like the champion of 1991, Linaro, and the dressage talent, Loutano. Some of his sons have already achieved top positions as performance sires, for example, Letus II, a jumping sire, and the versatile LANDADEL, who produced three champion stallions for the Oldenburger breed alone, and also the outstanding international showjumper, Le Cou Cou, a licenced stallion.

So far, 340 broodmares by
LANDGRAF are registered in the Holsteiner stud book, 260 of these are in the Main Stud Book, 70 have been awarded the State Premium, and a considerable number have been champion mares at shows. LANDGRAF was a legend already during his life time. His genes are securely ancored in the breed of the modern sporthorse. In his Stallion Book of the Holsteiner Warmblood Breed, Dr Dietrich Rossow comments: "Imposing appearance with enormous crest and neck carriage. Smooth total topline and much presence. Beautiful face with marvelous eye. Long, rather broad neck, long sloping shoulder. Withers, could be more clearly defined. Well shaped, muscular croup. Strong bone. Good in front. Slightly sickle hocked in youth (became very straight with age). Tied in below the hock and faults in the hind fetlocks. Good mover. Marvelous temperament. Phenomenal jumper; tight in front, lots of bascule, careful and talented. Great performance capabilities. Offspring are of various sizes and usually late developers. In youth, the tall ones appear leggy and narrow. Nearly always passes on his face, type and also his hindleg faults. Amost all offspring are endowed with their sire's jumping ability. In the beginning they jump rather awkwardly with less than ideal form which improves with increased maturity. Seldom passes on his overly heavy neck. Huge number of international class jumpers. Up to now (the book was published in 1988) LANDGRAF is by far the very best and most important jumper sire in the world!

GRAND SIRE & GRAND GRAND SIRE

LADYKILLER XX
1.64m, brown, 1961-1979, descendant from thoroughbred line 16

LADYKILLER XX embodies the powerful type of the thoroughbred. He was a strikingly handsome stallion with pronounced masculine attributes. He had an excellent mastery of the three basic gaits and was imbued with the very best character and temperament values. Of the enormous number of thoroughbreds that were applied in breeding in the 1960s and the early 1970s he turned out to be the best by far. The sires who came before him such as Anblick xx and Cottage Son xx who performed stud duty as contemporaries of LADYKILLER XX like the stallions Manometer xx and Marlon xx, also founded their own stallion lines. None however was as convincing on such a broad basis as LADYKILLER XX.

LADYKILLER XX
- Sailing Light XX x Loaningdale XX -

NOTE: LADYKILLER XX appears twice in LANDADEL's pedigree. - LANDADEL (Landgraf I - LADYKILLER XX x Farnes x LADYKILLER XX) -

LADYKILLER XX clearly transmitted himself, his marked type, the magnificent head correct and powerful foundation and excellent jumping ability in regard to capacity manner of jumping leg technique and above all spirit. A number of his progeny were striking because of their light tan colour with green legs as well as the occasionally open kidney region. His chestnuts were consistently even nobler than his bay progeny. Particular successes were achieved by mating with mares that were also of noble blood. Thus his best stallion sons by far LANDGRAF and LORD were both bred out of mares who themselves had significant proportions of the best thoroughbred blood.

LADYKILLER XX
- Sailing Light XX x Loaningdale XX -

LANDGRAF became the most important sire of showjumpers of the twentieth century. The Holstein Breeder's Association erected a life-sized bronze monument in his honour on the precincts of the association centre in Elmshorn the unveiling of which Landgraf I attended personally. Lord was approvals champion and likewise sent a whole armada of progeny to victory on the great showjumping courses around the globe. The fact that he was a three-quarter bred may be the reason why his hereditary transmission was not always of a completely harmonious type.

Even though
LADYKILLER XX did not really sire dressage horses he produced a son Lido whose forte in hereditary transmission was exactly in the field of dressage. It would be hard to find another Holsteiner who procreated dressage horses for the very highest demands as this stallion. In the Netherlands the LADYKILLER XX son Heidelberg who was named after his damsire became the pacemaker of the breed. The sires Lorenz, Lagos, Ladalco and Lamour all also went to Holland following their successful above average covering periods in Holstein.

When the German Warmblood breeders in the 60s and 70s turned to the Thoroughbred for refinement and athleticism, there were a number of important stallions that played a key role in the shaping the modern sport horse – none was more significant than
LADYKILLER XX.

While he stood in the far north of Germany, in Holstein, his influence continues to spread in 2002 the most expensive horse at the prestigious Fences Auction in France, was l'Arc de Triomphe, sold for 460,000 euros, a world record for a three year old – and he is a direct descendent of the great
LADYKILLER XX, indeed with a double cross on the sire line since he is by Landor S, by LANDADEL by LANDGRAF by LADYKILLER XX, out of Novella out of Furth, also by LADYKILLER XX.

LADYKILLER XX was born in England in 1961 but he was no star on the racetrack, racing three times in two years and rating only a 80.5 kilo handicap – which luckily for him, was 0.5 kilos more than the minimum required for a Thoroughbred stallion to be accepted into German breeding ranks. Before his death in 1979, he sired 35 stallion sons including the twin pillars of Holstein: LANGRAF and LORD. Both it should be noted out of mares with a good percentage of Thoroughbred blood – LORD's dam was a full blood, while LANDGRAF's dam was 25% Thoroughbred.

LADYKILLER XX's breeding features all the usual suspects found on jumping Thoroughbred pedigrees – Blue Peter, Phalaris, Son in Law, and you will find more discussion of this blood on the Bay Ronald page.

In his Stallion Book of the Holsteiner Warmblood Breed, Dr Dietrich Rossow had this to say about
LADYKILLER XX and his influence: "He was an averaged sized, clearly masculine type with a beautiful head, really heavy neck, good shoulder, rather flat loin, and a nicely coupled, heavily muscled croup. He had first rate legs and feet for a Thoroughbred and was an elastic mover. He was everything a state breeding program could wish for. With his 35 approved sons and 195 approved daughters, he has had the greatest impact of all on the Holsteiner breed. His best produce came through crosses with mares with some Thoroughbred blood. This was just the opposite case as with Anblick xx. When crossed with coarse, common mares, he produced accordingly. Today he must be viewed as one of the most important jumper sires of modern time. To enumerate all of his great performance offspring in the world of jumping goes beyond the limits of this essay. He sired fewer dressage horses. Whereas Marlon xx and Anblick xx influenced this Holsteiner modification phase more in the direction of riding horse types, LADYKILLER XX offspring correspond more to performance, jumper types. As a rule, they are strong horses, they are not, at first, very tight with their front ends. This however, quickly improves with increasing maturity."

Despite the proliferation of C line horses in Holstein breeding, the
LADYKILLER XX line retains its pride of place, indeed Claus Schridde draws attention to its proliferation even on the one set of papers: "Today it is almost a necessity of fashion in Holstein that a horse carries LADYKILLER XX blood at least two or three times, whereby it occurs from time to time, that horses in the first generations are inbred five or six times to this invaluable foundation sire. All along, a certain measure of inbreeding has been a regular formula for success in Holstein breeding. Anyone looking more closely at Holstein bloodlines or respectively, the pedigree papers of individual horses down to the roots, is frequently taken back about how frequently the same name literally jumps into one's face in the earlier generations. Today, where fresh blood in Holstein does not take effect at all, continued inbreeding to the proven 'classic' LADYKILLER XX is a piece of brinkmanship that demands a great amount of sure instinct by the breeders of Holstein." (from Selected Sires of Germany – A Yearbook of German Sires 2000)

In his review of the Holstein Upgraders in Z Magazine, Jasper Nissen has this to say about
LADYKILLER XX as a stallion: "Passed on a good temperament, although sometimes a little hot. In spite of his early injuries he did not pass on any defects in the limbs. Produced numerous first class broodmares and licensed stallions, including the top progenitors, LANDGRAF I and LORD, founded his own, wide-branched stallion line. LADYKILLER XX passed on specific characteristics, such a s a fine head, an often light brown colour with white on the legs, sometimes less coupled loins, good, powerful and correct bones, very good jumping qualities (lots of guts, power, fine technique and rounded back over the fence), excellent basic gaits and on average, good sized products; his chestnuts were often a bit more noble than his bay offspring."

DAMSIRE

FARNESE
brown, 1.65m, 1960-1982, descendant from Stamm 1866
breeder: Heinrich Groth, Kamperrege

FARNESE, an imposing, big framed, most important of all sires. Good face, strong neck, good shoulder and back, well muscled hind quarter. Good legs with big feet. Excellent, ground covering trot and good canter. Pleasant to ride with good temperament.

FARNESE - dam sire of LANDADEL - was a prepotent sire par excellance! The best type-sustaining stallion endowed with the Holsteiner performance assets, especially in trot and jumping ability. Tranmitted his type in all his offspring, including all his strong points. Excellent sized, well shaped and postioned necks with good faces. All offspring showed tremendous gaits and occasionally extraordinary jumping talent. FARNESE is sire of many competition horses especially out of refined mares. Good FARNESE daughters have had a great impact on the breed. FARNESE delivered 15 approved sons, 40 states premium mares and 194 approved daughters, international showjumpers and advanced dressage horses.

.

FARNESE
- Fahnrich x Loretto -

FARNESE embodied the Holsteiner par excellence for a long time. He was also one of the last Holsteiners to be drawn in, and that from the legendary stallion line of Achilles, which goes back far into the 19th century. Other classic Holstein lines have long since died out.

He was a large-framed, imposing, above all important sire with a beautiful face, strong neck, good shoulder and back. A slight deficiency in the kidney area, but a strong, well muscled hindquarters and a good foundation with large hooves. He had an excellent trot with a large grip, a good gallop and a little weak step with good rideability, but not entirely without tension. He was straightforward in character.

You can say a stamp stallion par excellance! Best preservation stallion with the good Holstein virtues as well as performances especially in trotting and jumping ability. His offspring were all in his type with his advantages: good face with a lot of attachments and good size, slight lack in the kidney area, but all show the big gear and sometimes show extraordinary jumping ability. Father of many performance horses, especially from noble mares.
FARNESE great merits in inheritance were rideability and absolute jumping ability, plus willingness to perform, character and very good movement.

Hopefully there is another descendant who can continue this valuable blood in a male line.

FARNESE's life was always with highlights accompanied. Despite his great offspring, he was sold as a stallion at the age of 8. A routine examination of his sperm showed that only a tiny fraction of his sperm were capable of fertilization. Despite the fact that there were no complaints and almost all mares became pregnant, he changed hands. But after his offspring hit both athletically and as a sire, the association again searched for the stallion. But nobody knew where the stallion had gone. FARNESE was now a hunting horse in Bavaria. His owner had 2 Holstein mares which he had bred for and which both became pregnant. The mares were sent to Holstein with their foals on foot for burning and when the stallion name was announced, everyone was in turmoil. After tough negotiations, the owner agreed to exchange FARNESE for a stallion of his choice from the association's stock. And although sperm quality was still poor, almost all of FARNESE's mares became pregnant.

Among many important stallions like Fantus, Flacon, Fontan, Fridericus, Fleming, falconers Fernando, Forever and Fasolt
FARNESE also has brought many top horses in the sport .

Particularly outstanding offspring are:
Farmer 29 r -Franke Sloothaak, 1984 Olympian Los Angeles
Falkner 28 -Sören von Rönne, Achaz von Buchwald, Rolf Bonnemann, licensed
Feodora 34 -Fritz Fervers
Footloose -Gerhard Helfrich, winner in 18 S and 33 M classes
Floskel - Volkert and Jörg Naeve
Flaneur 18 -Helmut Hartmann and Manfred Schlüsselburg
Fleming -Frauke Struve, Grand Prix victorious
Catch Ball 5 - Isabell Sundag, Dr. Beate Loesdau-Schützenauer, S dressage successful
Farina 42 - German champion 4-driver driving, international success 4-driver

Unfortunately, the successful tournament horses can only be tracked imprecisely, as no results from tournament horses were documented at this time. This has only been done since 1976.

FARNESE was also able to present himself as the dam's sire and is the grandfather of many successful sport horses and stallions with inheritance certainty, such as Chin Chin, LANDADEL, Le Champion, Liostro, Larinero, Literat, Leonardo I and II, Corleone and Carneval. FARNESE is welcome in the falling mother line, very valuable and often represented.

The F-stallion line is now almost extinct. It is only continued through
NIMMERDOR in Holland and in Germany through Nekton and his sons.

FARNESE comes from the Holstein line in 1866, which also includes the stallions Condios, Lands River, Memphis and Quinton .

GRAND DAM SIRE

FAHNRICH
1953, brown, 1.65m, descendant from Stamm 2004

FAHNRICH - From Rossow: "Description: Very tall, heavy sire with totally harmonious topline and good stallion expression. Great substance. Very beautifully shaped back suited for a saddle, well muscled. Strong bone, correct legs and feet. Good walk and canter, very good trot. Rather large feet. Very rideable in spite of his size. Produce: Mostly reproduced his type with smooth toplines and fabulous, energetic gaits... 6 approved sons, 76 approved daughters." Other stallions from stamm 2004 include Ariadus, Cromwell and Ratibor.

GRAND DAM SIRE

LORETTO
1932, brown, descendant from Stamm 18b1
a strong foundation sire of the Holstein breed

LORETTO - As well as HEINTZE, the influential hallmark stallion LORETTO (LORBEER - Elegant) is bred in on lineage 18b1. LORETTO - damsire of KWPN stallion AMOR - was described as a fine stallion with a nice character, very good gaits and a modern conformation that looked very similar to the stallions of the Elegant offspring, the less strong side of the Ethelbert family. Mostly less elastic horses with not always sufficient toughness. The Elegant side of the Ethelbert line was very popular in the 40's and 50's. After the attendance of jumping-horse breeding this line became extinct very quickly. Still, LORETTO delivered more than 30 approved sons and we see him back frequently in the dam's line of several international sport horses and licensed stallions. The progenetic qualities of LORETTO can be attributed to the accumulation of stallions from lineage 18b1. In third generation of LORETTO’s descent, we find four stallions of which three are Schiller, Vollmacht and Zeus, the three grandsons of Hertha from lineage 18b1. Another reason for the success of LORETTO is probably the fact that he was a good replenishment to the, notably, tough jumping blood of the stallions First (Tobias) and Mirza (Favorit - Tobias).

Pedigree Analysis of a Foundation of the Holstein Breed
Source: "Sport Horse Breeder"

LORETTO, a Holstein stallion born in 1932, has a stature as a superior pre-potent stallion that has stood the test of time. LORETTO aroses from the era when the heavy agricultural horse had been adapted into a stylish coach horse but there were still enough of the heavier stock for agricultural work (draught). The post-WWII movement for selection for a sport horse had not occurred yet. LORETTO then in type is a 'heavy coach' horse as well as a successful stallion.

Rossow and Tietz said, "The get of
LORETTO are splendid horses of incomparable dignity, possessing buoyant, springy gaits, which develop along with the horse and delight the observer." And LORETTO was valued because he brought not just the needed lightness but a wonderful elastic suspension in his movement.

You will not often see pedigrees as genetically strong as this one is in warmbloods--his sire Lorbeer HO has a strong background build-up of the Ethelbert HO bloodline. Ethelbert HO gave some riding horse points to the Holstein, along with a large dose of elegance and quality.
LORETTO was described as a small but wide bodied horse, who had a deep girth, high neck carriage, fabulous gaits, impulsion and enormous presence. He passed on his charisma along with soundness and a good mind. Notice that Ethelbert's 2nd sire is the Thoroughbred Ethelbert--who is a son of Faugh-a-Ballagh, this is a pre-potent jumping line. This horse and his full brother Birdcatcher are still powerful jump typesetters in the Thoroughbred and are behind the majority of the jumping lines of Europe. However, Ethelbert HO and Lorbeer HO were coach horse stallions--not sport horse stock, but the sport base was being laid through lines such as Faugh-a-Ballah, so later when more Thoroughbred and Trotter was added a potency in sport emerged.

On the dam side we find a strong presence of Achill HO 1877--this is still a important bloodline in the Holstein today. Achill HO is the product of extreme inbreeding as his sire Hercules HO and his dam Liesch HO are 1/2 brother and sister. But the gene consolidation goes much deeper because his 2nd sire is Achill YC 1849 who is a pure Yorkshire Coach Horse, by Brilliant YC out of Stern YC. Stern YC is 1x1 to a full brother and sister. If you ever wondered why the Holstein is so recognizable as a type--it is because of background genetics like these--closely bred ancestors that set a distinct type. For instance the equally powerful genetic transmitter Favorit HO is loaded with these same bloodlines (his analysis is found in North American Sport Horse Breeder). These foundations of the Holstein breed are Yorkshire Coach stock--a cross between Thoroughbred and Chapman Horse (Cleveland Bay), and over the years more and more Thoroughbred was added to improve the form and ability.

The Yorkshire Coach Horse was the greatest coach breed of the 1800s; they were large, elegant, fast and powerful trotters. They were prized as carriage horses and hunters, but were also used extensively as 'improvers' for other less stylish breeds. Germany imported huge numbers of these horses, to set a more carriage type into their largely heavy agricultural breeds. The Thoroughbred component in the Yorkshire brought in the sport ability. The Yorkshire Coach Horse, Norfolk Trotter, the French Trotter and the other trotter breeds are fully discussed in Standardbred Sport Horses.

Above is a public domain etching of a Yorkshire found on Wiki Commons

Of interest to those who like to trace the origin of athletic traits in our horses, in the great modern day jump breeds of Holstein and Selle Francais, you will find that both descend not just from Thoroughbred but from trotter breeds as well. The Selle Francais from the Norfolk Trotter (Hackney) with French Trotter, Anglo-Arab and Anglo-Norman. The French Trotter is a sport horse--it is a racing breed which was developed in the mid-1800s in France, and the sporting elements came to it via the Thoroughbred and Hackney and some American Trotter, not the Arab or Norman draft. The modern Holstein is largely of Yorkshire and Thoroughbred background genetics, the sport ability came from the Thoroughbred.

Besides the Ethelbert HO and Achill HO dominance, there is a third base power in this lineage formed by the full brother stallions Falb/Ali 4x5x5x4 with an extra line of their 1/2 sister Lawine HO in the 5th. This is the genetic equivalent of Falb HO being the grandsire of
LORETTO HO. Further, full siblings (there are several other groupings here), are the single most powerful genetic design you can build into your pedigrees. Genes form clusters that travel down the genetic trail together, so when you add in several full siblings into a lineage you have created a super-mass of the same genotype, which will overpower any other influences present. This is dominance with a captial "D".

So maybe Falb HO and Ali HO are German based bloodlines? Although Falb carries some East Prussian and Trakehner lines on his sireline, the rest of the pedigree is very similar to Achill HO. Falb HO is inbred 3x5 to Malcolm, a Mecklenburg bred coach horse who is of Thoroughbred and Yorkshire Coach lines, and he is 4x5 to the same Achill HO we discussed above. Mecklenburg Stud was the largest importer of coach, hunting and Thoroughbred stock from the British Isles expressly for the purpose of creating a proper coach horse because their draft horse based horses were too slow and heavy to meet the new transportation needs.

Rossow and Tietz said of Falb HO and Ali HO, "Both stallions were the embodiment of the brilliantly moving, splendid, pure coach horse." Neither of them ever produced any riding horses, only magnificent coach horses. Ali HO had thirty-three stallion sons and Falb HO had forty. Falb HO was considered the most important carriage horse of his era. He had tremendous presence and enormous action in his gaits, with a large frame while still being slab-sided.

Now, all we have discussed above declares
LORETTO HO possessed a great performance pedigree of the coach type and was a genetic powerful stallion--he would be able to pass it on reliably. But LORETTO is one of the greatest European typesetters of all time. And here is why: great stallions and broodmares need what we call filly factors--a strong female element, through full sisters, or several different daughters of a significant sire or both sons and daughters of a taproot mare (see Tesio Methods). This is what the statistics have shown. And here in front of us is the living proof. In LORETTO we find he is 4x4 to the full sisters Wachtel/Vista, he is 6x5x7x6 to Aniketa/Agathe, and he is 7x6x5 to Geel/Liesch.

Just having one of these strong filly factors would guarantee his success as a stallion, but with these three he has the genetic cohesion to last forever in the lineages of champions. His daughters are pure genetic gold in the pedigree.

LORETTO provided a strong coach horse base that carried enough Thoroughbred and Trotter, so that later on in the 1900s when Holstein got around to aiming for a sport horse there was substance and some genetic affinity with sport lines (TB and Trotter) to build on.

GRAND GRAND DAM SIRE

LORBEER
1919-1937, descendant from Stamm 2004.

LORBEER (by Elegant) founded the LORBEER/LORETTO line, that dominated Holstein breeding in 50s and 60s. Along his sire line he traces back to the stallion Ethelbert (s.St.Fagans XX).

LORBEER
- Elegant-Lord-Ethelbert x Vollmach x Fuesiller -

The well known infuential mare
MORGENSTER s.Gabriel, dam of the Dutch NWP and VLN approved stallion SINAEDA s.Camillus - grandsire of the KWN approved stallion ARGUS s.Pion - is a great great grandson of LORBEER.

MORGENSTER has a double cross of this line, since her dam Banka is by Lorentin, a grandson of LORBEER. In fact she traces again to the Ethelbert line again, since Banka is out of Lanziska who is by Makartk, from the other dominating Ethelbert line of the period, the Mackensen line. Mackensen is a son of Elegant and he in turn is the sire of Makart. Romdeio Graf von Thun-Hohenstein, describes the influence of this line in his work, The Holsteiner Horse: "Let it be said that Ethelbert 1197, particularly through his grandsons, had a lasting effect on the modelling of the Holsteiner. They gave the Holsteiner elegance and sparkle, and they brilliantly succeeded in demonstrating the synthesis of the central breeding goal: substance combined with quality."
.

ETHELBERT
- St. Fagans XX x Hannibal x Protocol -

In her new home in Holland,
MORGENSTER produced two approved sons, SENATOR s.Paladijn and SINAEDA s.by Camillus SINAEDA's sire Camillus was by Cambrinus, by the foundation NWP stallion Kambius. Kambius born 1936, was one of the more elegant offspring of the heavy Oldenburg stallion GAMBO, who came to the Netherlands in 1928 and who was, for the 25 years or so that the heavy warmblood stood, the most important Groninger stallion. Camillus was out of Anita, who was by another stallion of Oldenburg breeding, Godin. Now to modern eyes, SINAEDA might look like the ultimate 'clumfer' but to the conservative Dutch farmers, his progeny were the ultimate modern type and took some getting used to! According to Jacob Melissen: "His 24.5 cannon bone and 215 chest were not abnormal at the time. It was his size of 1.68 m, his luxury appearance and remarkably free shoulder action that amazed them. In ten years of service, SINAEDA produced 14 approved sons for the NWP and two for the VLN. SINAEDA has been influential in modern Dutch breeding and lineages rooted in a SINAEDA daughter is still an expensive asset."

Remark:
SINAEDA's daughter Laurine /ster delivered the mare Rozetta s.Jasper-Courville xx / ster; preferent. Rozetta on her turn delivered the KWPN approved stallion ARGUS s.Pion. ARGUS is sire of 1.71m pref, Z dr mare NAYADE STV (ARGUS x Uniform out of keur, pref, prestatie mare LILIUM). Mare LILIUM (s.Eros-AMOR ds.LORETTO) is dam of KWPN stallion VARIANT, dam sire of the influential KWPN dressage stallion NEGRO. The damline of LILIUM - granddam of NAYADE STV - traces back to foundation mare HESTIA s.Declamator s.GAMBO.

KWPN damline 102 / breeding family 236

NVDWhorses is breeding with the unique KWPN damline 102 / breeding family 236. The brown mare Hestia Sgldt 12280hb is the foundation mare of this damline. Her sire is Declamator GrPS 589Sgrt (Gambo OLD 325A / GrPS Prämienhengst pref x Simon GrPS 240A / GrPS/28G Prämienhengst). An origin with lots of traces to influential Holst genetics. NVDWhorses take Influential Holst genetical connections into account - more than average - when selecting stallions for their breeding program.

This damline has already delivered several approved stallions. I.e.
Variant, Ulster, Elegant, Guelderson, Monarch, Organist and Bretzel Des Feeries. In 2002 "Saffier van D" (by Donnerhall) out of Diamant STV was appointed for the KWPN stallion performance test at Ermelo. Diamant STV is a full sister to Jade STV, dam of NVDWhorses foundation mare Nayade STV (Argus x Uniform x Eros).

Worth knowing: both KWPN approved pref stallion Negro and KWPN approved pref stallion Jazz are in the leading stallions top of the global dressage scene. Both KWPN approved stallion
Variant - dam sire of Negro and KWPN approved stallion Ulster - dam sire of Jazz are descendants from this damline. This makes KWPN damline 102 / breeding family 236 not only unique, but also a very promising dressage breeding damline.
